Troubleshooting the Problems to Fix Your Car's A/C

Blog

Jump into your car on a hot Australian day, and you will be thankful that Willis Carrier invented air conditioning way back then. Yet you may not be as happy with your current automobile if it's simply blowing warm air in your face, which is hardly helping your mood. In this case, you'll want to get to the bottom of the situation as soon as possible and find out what's happening. But where should you start and what's the step-by-step process?

Missing Refrigerant

Your car's air conditioning system cannot work very well if the all-important refrigerant is leaking out. Sometimes, this can happen if an older hose starts to deteriorate, and you may notice some tell-tale liquid beneath the vehicle. Certainly, you can expect to see a small amount of refrigerant during normal operation, but if you have a sizeable pool, this could be the issue.

Blocked Condenser

Separately, you may find that the condenser is not working as it should. This part needs to keep the refrigerant as cool as possible and the device sits at the front of the vehicle next to the radiator. Sometimes, it can become blocked by road debris, preventing air from flowing across its surface. Take a look and see if you can clean that.

Non-Compressing Compressor

If you have a larger problem, it could be to do with a broken compressor. This is the heart of the system and circulates the refrigerant through the various parts. It's quite a hardy device, but if it's been switched off for a long time (for example, over the winter), it may need an overhaul. This is why some manufacturers recommend you keep your A/C on year-round, even at its very lowest setting.

Electrical Maladies

Some think that an electrical problem would automatically shut off the A/C and not allow it to blow any air, cold or otherwise. However, this is not always the case, and a sensor issue or frayed wire may be affecting certain parts and not others. You will need a testing device and some knowledge of the system to explore this yourself.

Turn It over to the Experts

If you'd rather not get even hotter under the collar by trying to diagnose this issue, get in touch with your friendly mechanic instead. They'll go through a step-by-step process and quickly deal with the issue so that you can get back on the road once again.
